Ann Arbor, MI - Another school year begins, which means new classes, new students, and new instructors. For some of us, this new school year also means a new school, new phase of life, or opportunity to explore new technology...like blogging.
Yet with all of this "newness" around us, can we really say that anything is truly new? Merriam-Webster.com defines new as "having recently come into existence." Is that what we're experiencing?
By the time we are old enough to attend or teach at a college, we've all experienced a first day of school. And if we've made it to college, we've also experienced a new school, new classes, new teachers, and new classmates.
For traditional students, young adulthood is a new beginning...but isn't that what they said about puberty and the teenage years? For nontraditional students, there may be a new wave of anxiety - but not one so different from that of buying a car, impressing an employer, or having a child.
As far as technology is concerned, we ca't begin to keep up with all of the advancement and newness; which means if you are currently drawing breath (and continue to do so), you have overcome new technology in the past, and will do so again in the future.
With all of that being said, I think it's fair to say that "new" is the new "old", like Facebook is the new Crack. After all, our mutual experience at this point in time certainly did not just come into existence. With that in mind, in my next blog, I would like to introduce you to myself on a personal level by sharing an autobiographical feature I wrote for a Journalism class I took while earning my Associate's degree in Technical Writing...until then, here's a little to get you started on getting to know me:
- I'm a nontraditional student, and my age would surprise you.
- My daughter, who is the greatest thing in my world, started Kindergarten last week.
- This isn't my first time at EMU; I've also attended MSU and WCC.
- I've already written two books, which I hope to have time to get published soon.
- I'd really love to start my freelance writing work (for pay) sooner rather than later.
